Big-game fishing

Ocean giants such as marlin, tuna, wahoo and sailfish are frequent visitors to the seas around the Dominican coast. Amanera can arrange expert-led full- or half-day fishing expeditions from Laguna Gri Gri, 10 minutes from the resort.

Humpback whale watching

Between January and March each year, humpback whales gather to breed in the waters around Samana Bay, a short journey along the coast from Amanera. Private whale-watching trips can be arranged, bringing guests up close and personal with the friendly ocean giants.

Eco tours by kayak and SUP

Set off from Rio San Juan and take a kayak or stand-up-paddleboard east along the coast to Laguna Gri Gri, where the mangroves provide an important ecosystem for many species of birds, fish and reptile. Along the way, look out for sheltered coves, where schools of fish leap out of the water, and sea urchins and oysters dot the seabed. After exploring the mangroves, pause at a natural pool and snorkel the still, warm waters of the lagoon.
